A square white ironstone pottery 'Pure Butter' slab, with slightly chamfered edges and decorated along the front with stylised lettering in under-glaze black transfer. A heavy, early example with no retailers transfer to the underside.
Used by the turn of the century grocer, butcher and dairies before widespread refrigeration, these slabs were often placed outside overnight to chill before being adorned with butter, margarine, lard and butchers produce, the white glazed ironstone pottery keeping cool in the display cabinets throughout the day.
13-1/2" x 13-1/2" top edge
14" x 14" bottom edge
Original unrestored condition with some wear, firing marks and a couple of small old chips/scrapes, with one on the bottom edge of the left side and one on the inside of the rim above the lettering.
