Dunlop protective footwear showcard - Mallard duck
A rarely offered vintage English showcard for Dunlop protective footwear, made of laminated tin backed with card.
Depicting a Mallard Duck taking flight over a snowy bank of rushes and titled 'Mallard in the Fens', it was used by retailers of outdoor pursuit clothing and hunting stockists that sold their boots in the middle of the last century.
Producing tyres and rubber products such as boots and jackets, Dunlop often made interesting and engaging advertising aimed at their specific target audiences. From farmers bringing in their cattle whilst wearing dunlop wellington boots to housewives playing tennis in their plimsolls, their advertising often showed the activities to be engaged in whilst wearing their products.
With their rubber boots slogan 'As British as the Land!' and the footwear synonymous with country living folk, their advertising extended in part to hunters and farmers. Using familiar imagery of their lives and the game they stalked, this example appealed to fowl hunters in the boggy marshland of East Anglia.
Incidentally Curio Cartel is based in Fenland, and we can definitely confirm the need for waterproof footwear whilst walking through the wild bogs of the Fens!
