Large Regency Papier-Mache tray - Raby Castle, Durham
A superb large English Regency papier-mache tray, beautifully hand painted with an exterior view of Raby Castle, County Durham.
Early 19thC, the body of the tray is fully painted with a wonderful panorama of the medieval castle, which has then been embellished with inlaid mother of pearl to emulate the sun glistening off the walls. Painted by a proficient hand and likely to be a one-off, the lovely use of light breaking through the rolling clouds can be seen on the tree's each side, which beautifully frame the vignette of deer resting on the lawns in the foreground.
The painting is labelled 'Raby Castle, Durham' in the middle of the bottom of the tray, with the raised, shaped edge ebonised in the style of chinoiserie black lacquer & gilt. A very decorative & early tray with pleasing signs of wear & age, the crackling in the finish really adds to its character.

Condition:
In original untouched condition with wear, staining, crackling and marks commensurate with age. There is some scuffing on the edges and a split in the bottom right corner, but this does not detract and it displays very well.
