A ceramic phrenology bust by L. N. Fowler.
Widely copied and made famous by replicas, this is an original example on which they were based, dating from the mid 19thC, circa 1860.
The under glaze transfer printing across the piece is entirely in blue, some of which has leached slightly upon firing, with some minor runs on the shoulders and a slight blur to some of the other transfers.

Glaze crazing across the piece and a few small wear and firing marks, including a rust coloured mark on the left side back edge, below the shoulder, and one on the side of the bridge of the nose, next to the left eye.
