A Green's patent 'arctic' candlestick, Patent date USA Sept 1, 1896. The sprung brass tube, sleeved with Ivorine, pushes the candle to the top for a continuous burn. The sleeve also protected the burning candle from the extreme cold whilst on expeditions and voyages, preventing freezing and cracking, hence the namesake, the 'Arctic'.
Complete with a very rare brass gimbal table clamp. A finely made adjustable device which secures the candle in an upright position, this clamp would have been useful on board a ship, not only for reading charts but preventing the risk of fire by tipped candles in rolling oceans.
190mm candle length (7-1/2")
205mm clamp arm length (8")
Very good condition with no breaks or damage.
