A late Victorian/Edwardian Grocers display slab, used for butter, margarine, lard or butchers produce.
Heavily made in white ironstone pottery, with an under-glaze black top transfer showing 'Justitia et Fides' (Justice & Faith), along with the retailers advertising above and below for 'S. Banfield - Brighton, Hastings, Eastbourne & Horsham'.
A couple of small chips have been professionally restored, along with some airbrushed refinishing across a portion of the top and the underside, but displays very well and is a particularly substantial and early slab that is notably heavier than a lot of later versions.
