Enquire About This Item

An early 20th century shop display slab. Used by the turn of the century grocer, butcher and dairies before widespread refrigeration, these slabs were often placed outside overnight to chill before being adorned with butter, margarine, lard and butchers produce, the white glazed ironstone pottery keeping cool in the display cabinets throughout the day.

A square example with slightly chamfered edges, the front is decorated with crisp stylised 'Pure Butter' lettering in under-glaze black transfer. Underneath is a very clean strike of the trapezoid makers mark for 'Parnall and Sons Ltd. Lodge Causeway, Fishponds, Bristol'.

13-3/4" Wide (35cm)

14" Front to back (35.5cm)

2-1/4" Deep (5.5cm)

Original unrestored condition with some wear & firing marks. Some fat vein staining to the top, but otherwise perfect with no damage, chips or cracks. Generally a very clean, decorative slab with honest signs of a lifetime of use.
