Carved Tahitian black pearl oyster shell
Regular price £95
A mounted shell of the Tahitian Black Ocean Pearl Oyster, with relief carved decoration of a fisherman standing on the sea shore, holding his nets over his shoulder and looking out to sea.
A tourist piece from the late 1800's, which were carved by residents of French fishing villages. As Tahiti fell into French Polynesia, the availability of these shells proved a useful and beautiful resource for craft makers and poor sailors families.
An ever so slightly larger and more mature shell than more commonly seen, the juvenile white spots on the reverse 'bark' blurring into more sandy streaks. The same animal creates the famed black pearls, leaving this shell as a result. Mounted with the original soldered wire hanger on the reverse.
140mm Tall (5-1/2") x 127mm wide (5")
