A rare antique oak breadboard intricately carved with foliate plumes, armorial shields and a scrolling banner emblazoned with 'Manners Makyth Man', the motto of the two educational institutions founded by William of Wykeham - New College Oxford and Winchester College.
The top of the board shows the two armorial shields associated with the colleges, one carved with a key and dagger, the other with chevrons and roses. Both the lettering and armorial emblems are embellished with old gilt paint which has patinated to a lovely distressed golden colour, with the pronounced deep carving standing out boldly against the textured edge.
Usage wear, patination and cut marks commensurate with over a century of use, but overall a stunning board in excellent condition with a small hanging loop screwed into the back for display.
