An antique Pure Butter display slab, heavily made of white ironstone pottery with stylised black transfer lettering around the front edge and two cutout handles. A large and well used original example with plenty of character.
Used by the turn of the century grocer, butcher and dairies before widespread refrigeration, these slabs were often placed outside overnight to chill before being adorned with butter, margarine, lard and butchers produce, the white glazed ironstone pottery keeping cool in the display cabinets throughout the day.
Marks and staining to the top and the underside rim has two moderate chips, but displays very nicely and they do not detract.
