An antique Pure Butter display slab, heavily made of white ironstone pottery with stylised black transfer lettering around the front edge and two cutout handles on each side. The underside of the slab has a rarely seen retailers transfer for The International Tea Co's Stores Ltd.
Used by the turn of the century grocer, butcher and dairies before widespread refrigeration, these slabs were often placed outside overnight to chill before being adorned with butter, margarine, lard and butchers produce, the white glazed ironstone pottery keeping cool in the display cabinets throughout the day.
The underside of the rim at the front of the slab has a slight old impact crack, but it is sound and not moving. The edge of the cutout handle on the 'Pure' side of the slab has a scrape/chip. The top of the slab has some wear marks, slight staining and a couple of firing marks, but otherwise a very good example in clean original condition.
