A rare pair of Victorian Maw & Sons pharmacy storage jars, made of white ironstone pottery and both fitted with strapped & hinged tin lids.
In two slightly different sizes, the smaller is marked on the underside of the foot with a black 'MAW' makers transfer, with the larger displaying an embossed '18'.
An early pair of scarce jars with no damage, similar examples can be seen in archived catalogues dating to around 1860-70. As well as being used in the apothecary, their clip-shut hinged lids meant they could be used in travelling medical kits without fear of the substances inside spilling.
11.4cm Tall with lid (4-1/2")
11.4cm Pot diameter (4-1/2")
10.2cm Tall with lid (4")
9.2cm Pot diameter (3-5/8")
Some staining and glaze crazing to the pots, with some rusty wear on the ceramic where the metal lid straps are attached. The lids have some wear and flaking to the original black paint.
