A Victorian dust-pressed earthenware pottery tile from Minton china works (Stoke on Trent), part of the 'Animals on the farm' series designed by renowned 19thC artist William Wise.
Decorated with a pastoral scene entitled 'Goats and Kids' which was printed onto the tile in sepia under-glaze transfer with an etched copper plate. The series (which included at least 14 scenes) was designed in 1879 and produced on tiles 1880 - 1890.
A very popular range, they were used in a variety of aesthetic movement applications including fireplace surrounds, jardinieres and decorative focal points in tiled kitchens and butchers shops. A rarely offered antique tile in good condition, nicely framed in solid polished Oak and ready to be hung on the wall.
Tile - 20.3cm x 20.3cm (8"x 8")
Frame - 24.7cm x 24.7cm (9-3/4" x 9-3/4")
When the back is removed, you can see the corners of the tile have been bumped/slightly chipped, probably when the tile was salvaged from it's original setting. Otherwise very good condition with light surface wear commensurate with age.
